There are many ways that we waste money in our everyday lives, and simply don’t think about it. Maybe it’s not priority, or maybe it’s hidden and isn’t glaring us in the face on a daily basis.

Whatever the case may be, here are twelve simple ways to stop wasting money in your household starting today!

1 ~ Be aware when signing up for free trials.

While sometimes we may remember to cancel that free subscription or trial, many times we forget about it and the actual subscription kicks in, even if it’s something we decided we didn’t want! Most companies will not refund your money simply because you forgot to stop the trial.

2 ~ Stop the daily coffee runs!

While the convenience is nice, take a moment and do the math for a month’s worth of that fancy coffee that you are stopping daily for. Take a few minutes extra of your time, and brew your own at home!

3 ~ Pay your credit card bill in full and on time.

Any time you fail to pay off your credit card balance by the end of the month, you are paying unnecessary interest. Make a point to pay your bill in full and on time every month, and you’ll avoid those interest charges and get an opportunity to keep the difference!

4 ~ Stop the car payments!

If you’re making payments on a car, you’re paying too much. Sell it and buy something used with cash. You can save that monthly payment, upgrade to a better vehicle in one year, and be well on your way to driving cash-only cars for life!

5 ~ Walk or bike as much as possible.

Not only will it save money on fuel, but you will be building a better body and better health while you are at it!

6 ~ Gym memberships.

Yep, I said it. Stop the gym membership. That is, if you are not using it anyway. If you are hitting the gym daily or at least several times a week, then by all means keep it! But if you have it simply for the feeling of fitness it gives you, and don’t actually use it, get rid of it!

7 ~ Stop buying lottery tickets!

According to statistics, you  are four times more likely to be killed by a vending machine falling on you, than to win the lottery. Take that same money you were formerly paying for lotto tickets and gambling, and invest it into mutual funds, or at the very least, put it in your savings account.

8 ~ Turn off the TV.

Really. You aren’t doing yourself a favor by parking yourself in front of a television for hours a day. Use that same time to build a side income working from home. There are literally tens of thousands of opportunities to make a great side income for only several hours of work per week.

9 ~ Make your own gifts instead of buying them.

Not only will this save you a little cash, it is usually more meaningful to the the recipients of your gifts when they realize you handcrafted them!

10 ~ Shipping charges.

Many online retailers now offer free shipping options on many items. Before you click “Buy Now” on the first item you see, take a little time to research other online retailers who may offer the exact same item with free shipping.

11 ~ Entertainment costs.

I have six kids myself, so I understand how quickly entertainment costs can accumulate. There are many options for entertainment besides the ones that you need to pay for. Watch a movie at home versus the movie theater. Go on a hike in a park. Find local places that give free tours. The options are endless!

12 ~ For the love of all that is good, quit smoking!

If you are a smoker, you will know by now that your habit is not only expensive, but potentially deadly as well. If you want to add years to your life and save a boatload of money, the easiest thing to do is to stop smoking altogether. Even if you are an average smoker that consumes only one pack per day, that adds up to over $20,000 in ten years!
